A petition calling for a Scots university to revoke Donald Trump's honorary doctorate has received over 3,500 signatures.

Trump received an honorary doctorate from Robert Gordon University in 2010 in recognition of his 'business acument and entrepreneurial vision'.

Dr David Kennedy, former RGU principal, handed back his own honorary doctorate in protest at the decision.

The US entrepreneur announced his candidacy for President in June and has become embroiled in a series of scandal since then. On Monday, he caused uproar after calling for a 'complete shut down of Muslims entering the United States' in a speech following the fatal shooting in California.

Following, Trump's speech, Republican rival Jeb Bush, described the US businessman, who owns golf courses in Aberdeenshire and South Ayrshire, as 'unhinged' and said his plans were 'not serious'.

The petition to revoke Trump's degree says: "We feel that Donald Trump's unrepentant, persistent verbal attacks on various groups of people based on nationality, religion, race and physical abilities are a huge detriment to RGU. Hate speech must not have a place in academia, in politics or on the world stage. We are confident RGU will agree with the petitioners, and act swiftly.

"We would also note the brave opposition of Dr David Kennedy to this degree at the time it was bestowed."

The petition, launched by Suzanne Kelly, has already received 3,584 signatures.

Trump has made a series of controversial comments about immigration in the last few months.

He told supporters in a speech earlier this year: "(Mexico is) sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists."
