A Scottish university has stripped Donald Trump of an honorary degree following his comments that Muslims should be refused entry to the United States.

A spokesman for Robert Gordon University (RGU) said that the presidential hopeful's remarks were incompatible with its values.

There was international outrage after Mr Trump called for "a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States" after a couple, believed to have been radicalised, opened fire and killed 14 people at a health centre in San Bernardino, California.

RGU said it had awarded an honorary degree in 2010 “in recognition of (Mr Trump’s) achievements as an entrepreneur and businessman”.

In recent days, however, “Mr Trump has made a number of statements that are wholly incompatible with the ethos and values of the university. The university has therefore decided to revoke its award of the honorary degree.”
