More than three-quarters of the Scottish population think church is good, according to a study of Christianity in Scotland.

The church-based study claimed 83 per cent of Scots think churches benefit communities, and that 70 per cent of the population would attend a church service to meet new people.

The research was commissioned by a church body called Transforming Scotland.

A spokesman said most people think church is a "good thing".

Andy Bathgate, chairman of Transforming Scotland, said: “The research has shown a significant number of the Scottish public think the church is a good thing because it strengthens and cares for those around it and acts as a positive influence for young people.”

The research also showed the top three programmes currently offered by churches in Scotland are youth clubs, parent and toddler groups and food banks.
