More than 5,000 homes are without power in Scotland as gale-force winds and heavy rain from Storm Frank batter the country.

Our pictures tell the dramatic story of the day as emergency services battle to keep people safe and keep traffic moving.

The Herald:

The M74 at Abingdon, the main route from England into Scotland, was closed to northbound traffic.

The track on the Helensburgh to Cardross rail line was also flooded during the overnight storm.

In Glasgow, flooding has closed Great Western Road at Shelley Road and Aitkenhead Road. Cars have become stranded and firefighters are helping motorists stuck in flash flooding.

The main road in Ballater was also closed as water swept through the town.

The Herald:

Met Office amber "be prepared" warnings are in place covering all mainland regions, with the exception of the Highlands, where yellow "be aware" warnings remain.
