Facebook has been left red-faced after a Burns Supper 'gaffe' offered users the Union Jack instead of that of Scotland or even a picture of The Bard.

The Herald:

Users choosing the  event from a list of celebrations in Facebook’s “what you’re doing or how you’re feeling” option are not provided with an icon of the Bard or indeed the Scottish national flag.

Some have complained directly to Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg saying it is an insult to Scots.

It's not the first time users have had to cry foul over flags on Facebook.

In November, in a St Andrew’s Day 'gaffe' users were offered the national flag of Romania instead of Scotland.

Scots who wished to mark the occasion by choosing the ‘celebrating St Andrew’s Day’ status found that instead of the traditional white cross on a blue background of the Saltire, a blue, yellow and red Romanian flag appeared.

For the record, St Andrew is the patron saint of both Scotland and Romania - as well as Greece, Russia, Poland, Ukraine and Barbados.

Facebook eventually fixed the flag after outraged users sent images of what a Saltire should look like.
