Police have closed a street in Aberdeen after a sinkhole opened up in the road.

Officers shut Chapel Street at around 7pmyesterday after a taxi driver reported the 2ft sinkhole.

It has been reported that the road collapsed due to water ingress caused by the recent bad weather.

An Aberdeen City Council spokesperson told STV: "Chapel Street is closed from its junction at Thistle Street and Union Street following a partial road surface collapse due to water ingress. 

"The road will remain closed throughout the peak traffic time on Friday morning and road users are asked to bear this in mind when planning their journeys."

A taxi rank on the street has also been closed.
