Scotland has "everything to gain" from leaving the European Union (EU), Conservative MP Liam Fox has said ahead of a rally to make the case for Brexit.

The former defence secretary insisted a vote to leave the EU would benefit farming and fishing communities while it would also free up the opportunity to establish new trade agreements for whisky.

Mr Fox will share a platform with Ukip leader Nigel Farage at a Grassroots Out rally in Glasgow on Thursday evening.

He said: "Scotland has everything to gain from Brexit. For a start, it would see its democratically-elected representatives once more having the last say in deciding its laws. It could control its own taxes and its own economic and social policies.

"For too long now, Scotland's farming and fishing policies have been subject to diktat from Brussels, which always applies the lowest common denominator across the whole of Europe.

"Scotland should be able to revive its fishing communities by taking control of its own coastline, just like Norway and Iceland are able to do outside the EU."

He added: "Scottish whisky is renowned throughout the world and a new lucrative market is just opening up in India. This is despite a 150% tariff placed on its importation.

"While the UK is in the EU, we are powerless to establish a free trade agreement directly with India to do away with this colossal disincentive to buy Scottish whisky abroad.

"Whether it is security, jobs and trade, fishing and farming, energy or the environment, the greater risk is staying in the EU. Scotland should take this once-in-a-generation chance to vote to leave."

The Grassroots Out rally will also hear from Tory MP Peter Bone and Ukip Scotland leader and MEP David Coburn.
