Some of the Scotland’s biggest football stars have been hit in a wave of cash demands totalling millions of pounds after the tax avoidance clampdown.

New laws to tackle cases of tax avoidance among the rich and famous mean tax authorities can now re-examine a series of tax schemes.

It has brought an avalanche of payment notices, with hundreds of demands sent to former and existing football stars.

Rangers and Celtic players are among those to be hit.

The Herald:

It is claimed it also includes at least one player who could play in Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final between the Glasgow rivals.

At least three Scotland captains and their international teammates were said to have been on the list.

Although many of the schemes were at one stage officially approved by HM Revenue and Customs the retrospective change in the law means those who used them are now personally liable if they are found to be of concern, the Daily Record reported.

One current Scotland player said: “There is a feeling that we are being hung out to dry.

“Some of the boys are being hit with demands for sums of seven, eight or nine times what they invested into these schemes.

“No one wants to be declared bankrupt but some of the guys might have no other choice.”
