Two men have been killed after their car crashed into a tree in Aberdeenshire.

The men, aged 24 and 32, died at the scene of the one-vehicle accident on the A93 Banchory to Aboyne road, near the entrance to Aboyne Loch Caravan Park.

The red Volkswagen Golf left the road and struck a tree shortly before 10pm on Thursday.

Police Scotland road policing inspector Jon Barron said: "This was a devastating and tragic incident which has very sadly resulted in the deaths of two young males. Our thoughts are very much with their families and friends at this difficult time.

"Our inquiries into the circumstances are at a very early stage. In order to help piece together exactly what has happened, it is vital that we speak with anyone that may have any relevant information.

"I would urge anyone who hasn't yet got in touch with us to do so by phoning 101 or calling at their nearest police office."
