A 12-week old baby girl found unconscious at a homeless families' facility in West Lothian has died.

Police Scotland said Sophia Williams died on Sunday at the Royal Hospital for Children in Edinburgh.

She had been under the care of medical staff since Monday, May 30 after "taking unwell" in the facility in West Main Street in Broxburn.

Chief Inspector Stevie Dolan, Area Commander for West Lothian, said: “First and foremost, I wish to pass on my sincere condolences to Sophia’s family.

“This is an extremely tragic case and we are treating her death as unexplained at this time.

“I can, however, offer my personal reassurance that a thorough police investigation is now under way in order to establish the full set of circumstances that led up to her untimely passing.”

It was earlier reported the infant was discovered unconscious at Strathbrock Family Unit.

The West Lothian council run home was cordoned off by police at the time.

A spokeswoman for West Lothian Council said: "This is very sad news.

"We would like to give our sincere condolences to Sophia's family.

"It is not appropriate to comment further."
