US presidential candidate Donald Trump has been unveiled as the star of a new children's book.

American actor and comedian Michael Ian Black has written 'A Children's First Guide to Trump', a Dr Seuss-like send up.

The book features 'the American Trump', a curious creature spotted often in the wild but "confounding to our youngest citizens".

It includes a description of the American Trump beasty, an allusion to the Republican presidential candidate's half-Scottish heritage, which says:

"Its skin is bright orange, its figure is plump;

"Its fur so complex, you might get enveloped.

Its hands are, sadly, underdeveloped."

Black says in a tongue-in-cheek statement that his book, to be published July 5 (Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, $15.99), will help kids learn to identify a Trump and what to do if they come across one.

"Yes, Trumps are wild and unpredictable creatures, but with a little knowledge I hope everybody can learn to appreciate the Trump for the misunderstood, absurd creature it is," says Black, an actor in multiple series (currently, he's in Another Period), comedian, writer, director and poker player.

The book's illustrations are by Marc Rosenthal.

There are also a number of picture books about Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, including Hillary by Jonah Winter; Hillary Rodham Clinton: Some Girls are Born to Lead by Michelle Markel are two recent.
