A man suffered "serious wounds" in an attack in Edinburgh city centre at lunchtime.

The 32-year-old was assaulted by two men on Waterloo Place at about 12.40pm on Wednesday.

His attackers then left in a white car towards Regent Road.

Police said the victim "sustained a number of serious wounds". He was taken to hospital for treatment.

The area was cordoned off while police carried out inquiries at the scene but later reopened.

Detective Sergeant Neil Spowart said: "This part of the city centre, just past the east end of Princes Street, was very busy at lunchtime with shoppers and visitors, and I want to speak to anyone who was in the area and may have seen the assault or the two men beforehand or afterwards."

Police Scotland can be contacted on 101.
