Police are questioning a couple over the death of an eight-month-old baby boy who suffered multiple injuries.
The child was rushed to hospital on Tuesday morning from the family home in Rochdale but doctors were unable to save him and he died on Wednesday.
Police have arrested the baby's parents.
Neighbours said the baby was born in December and the family moved into the rented end terrace house in the Spotland area around three months ago.
Today forensic scenes of crime officers in white boiler suits went in and out of the property conducting searches and investigations.
One local woman who knows the family said she saw the drama unfold on Tuesday morning.
She said: "I was on the school run and the ambulance was coming up and a police car.
"Then the ambulance came flying down and police were stood outside so I knew something had happened.
"We are all shocked by it. You don't expect it do you?
"All we were told was the baby was in hospital and something bad had happened.
"I don't believe it if I'm honest. I just believe the baby was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
Greater Manchester Police said they had arrested a man aged 25 on suspicion of murder and a 24-year-old woman on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child.
Detective Chief Inspector Jamie Daniels said: "This is a deeply distressing investigation involving a small child.
"Our thoughts at this time are with the family, friends and all others within the local community who may be affected by this incident.
"If anyone has any information that may assist the investigation please call 101."
A single police officer guarded the door on Friday as occasional visitors left floral tributes beside a small, brown teddy bear.
One message on flowers read: "Safe in God's arms, God bless you XXX"
A second floral tribute read: "I never saw your face, I never knew your name, Your little life extinguished like a candle flame
"May you light the skies in heaven, burn bright for all to see, Your (sic) safer where you are now, no pain, no fear, your (sic) free!"
It was signed: "From a mum."
