FLORIDA senator Marco Rubio was badly mauled by Donald Trump in the Republican primaries. But at least he had the consolation last night of being re-elected to the Senate, after seeing off his young Democrat challenger, Representative Patrick Murphy.

JUSTIN Webb, the former BBC North America editor who now presents Today, was at the US ambassador's election party in London. Ever-sensitive to the mood of his hosts, he tweeted at around 2.30am: "All the sober people at the us ambassador's party think she's lost."

AT the same party, where more than 1,000 guests snacked on popcorn, Starbucks coffee, and burgers and milkshakes, was Malise Sundstrom, chairwoman of Republicans Overseas. Observing the heavily Democrat-supporting turnout, she pleaded: "If you see any others (Trump supporters) here tonight please introduce me, I'd love to meet them."

CHANNEL 4 presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy, meanwhile, tweeted this before the election countdown got underway. "My 9yr old's view: 'I want Hillary to win because she's better but want Trump to win so I can hear everyone going 'Oh my God Trump won!'"

TRUMP'S son Eric may have broken New York state law by tweeting a photo of his completed ballot. He later deleted the tweet. An 1890 New York law bans voters from showing marked election ballots to others.

THE New York gravestone of American women's suffrage leader Susan B Anthony was yesterday covered with "I Voted" stickers . Anthony died in Rochester in 1906, 14 years before women won the right to vote in America.

THOUSANDS of US voters (not all of them Clinton voters) marked election day by wearing pant-suits, the candidate's signature style. There's even a private Facebook group, Pantsuit Nation.Only in America ...

AND a cheering thought to end with. Frankie Boyle tweeted: "Looking forward to Trump falling face down, screaming onto the nuclear button on his first day in office."
