Writer AA Gill has died at the age of 62, just weeks after revealing he had cancer.

The long-standing Sunday Times columnist and restaurant reviewer, who was born in Edinburgh and was known by his first name Adrian, died on Saturday morning.

Last month he told how he had been recently diagnosed after family concerns about his rapid weight loss with what he described as the “full English” of cancers.

He also revealed his diagnosis had prompted him to propose to Nicola Formby, his partner of nearly a quarter of a century.

Sunday Times editor Martin Ivens expressed condolences to his family and said: "Adrian was stoical about his illness, but the suddenness of his death has shocked us all. He was the heart and soul of the paper. His wit was incomparable, his writing was dazzling and fearless, his intelligence was matched by compassion. Adrian was a giant among journalists. He was also our friend. We will miss him.”
