A magnitude 8 earthquake has struck 100 miles off the coast of Papua New Guinea, according to the US Geological survey, sparking a tsunami warning for the region. 

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said widespread hazardous tsunami waves are possible following the quake this morning.

People in the region have been warned to stay alert and wait for instruction from local authorities.
