Social media platform Facebook has launched a check-in for users who are concerned friends and family following the Christmas market crash in Berlin.

The feature allows people to indicate that they are safe and well following the tragic incident.

This also helps reduce the number of calls to the police with hundreds of concerned friends and family trying to discover information about loved ones.

A truck ran into a crowded Christmas market in the centre of Berlin killing at least nine people and causing multiple injuries on Monday evening.

The driver of the truck was arrested near the scene and a passenger died at the scene.
