US President-elect Donald Trump has said America must “greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability”.

He tweeted the US must bolster its arsenal “until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes”.

The tweet comes a day after he met with several military procurement officers to discuss defence budgets.

During the election campaign, Mr Trump had suggested the US should expand its arsenal and mused the world would be “better off” if other countries had nuclear capabilities. Mr Trump’s transition website said he “recognises the catastrophic threats posed by nuclear weapons and cyber attacks”, adding he will modernise the arsenal “to ensure it continues to be an effective deterrent”.

Campaign rival Hillary Clinton repeatedly cast the Republican as too unpredictable to have control of the nation’s weapons, while 10 former nuclear missile launch operators wrote that Mr Trump lacked the temperament, judgment and diplomatic skill to avoid nuclear war.
