A PRIEST and a group of churchgoers have been pelted with eggs while on their way to Mass in a sectarian attack.

The gang of youths also shouted sectarian abuse at Father Kevin Dow and his parishioners while outside St John & St Columba’s Church in Rosyth, Fife, on Tuesday evening.

One person who witnessed the incident said the victims were “showered” with rotten eggs by a group of 10 children aged about 12.

The church has since taken to social media to hit out at the parents of the youngsters, saying their behaviour is a result of how they have been brought up.

They said this was not the first time they had been abused, having had bottles of Buckfast thrown at their building. Police are believed to be investigating the hate attack.

Parish priest, Father Kevin Dow told his local paper, the Dunfermline Press: “It’s dreadfully sad that in today’s Scotland we still have young people who seem to be brought up or encouraged from elsewhere to be anti-Catholic and to do so in an open, intimidating and violent way.”

The church also took to its official Facebook page to hit out at the children’s parents for the way they raised their children.

It wrote: “The joy of today’s society. About 10 or so kids aged around 12 decided to throw raw eggs this evening at St John & Columba’s Church, just as parishioners were arriving for Mass.”

Councillor Sharon Wilson, of Rosyth and North Queensferry said: “I have spoken to Chief Inspector Irene Ralston and made her aware of the church incident. She is going to look into everything and put a plan together.”
