Former Dundee-United footballer David Goodwillie has quit his football club to concentrate on his appeal against a court ruling that he raped a woman.

The Scotland International, who was playing for Plymouth Argyle FC, released a statement through the club confirming he has asked to be released.

Last week a court ruled Goodwillie and his former teammate David Robertson raped a woman after a night out in 2011.

Both men deny the charge and claim sex was consensual.

Former team mate Robertson revealed last week he had quit football following the hearing.

Goodwillie revealed today he has also quit football and plans to focus on an appeal following Lord Armstrong’s verdict last week.

The woman had originally sought £500,000 in compensation but damages of £100,000 were agreed in the civil action at the Court of Session in Edinburgh.

Last week Plymouth Argyle said they would not play Goodwillie for the forseeable future.

Today they released a statement which said: "Plymouth Argyle Football Club Limited ('PAFC') confirm that David Goodwillie has left the club by mutual agreement."

"Mr. Goodwillie has asked the club to terminate his contract of employment in order that he can focus his time on a potential appeal of the civil judgement made against him. PAFC has agreed to his request."

"PAFC will make no further comment on this matter."
