A Holyrood by-election resulting from a Tory MSP's decision to contest a Westminster seat will be held on the same day as the General Election.

John Lamont, MSP for Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire in the Scottish Borders, announced on Tuesday he was standing down to focus on campaigning to become a MP.

Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh has fixed the date for a by-election in the constituency on June 8, the same day as the snap General Election called by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Mr Lamont is contesting the Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk Westminster constituency, which covers much of the same area as his current role.

Formerly held by ex-Liberal Democrat Scottish secretary Michael Moore, the seat is the most marginal for the SNP, with Mr Lamont being defeated by the nationalists' Calum Kerr by just 328 votes in 2015.
