FOR many years there has been an almost total neglect by the Scottish press of our pipe band tradition, right back from when I started playing the pipes in the 1960s. This, unfortunately, extends to our TV stations, where there is never a preview nor results of any of the five major championships taking place each year.

The “Worlds” attract more than 250 bands from all over the globe, yet get no intelligent preview, comment, nor results published – quite extraordinary and patently absurd.

We do get, usually, trite and rather demeaning photos of children with feathered bonnets easting an ice cream cone or some such insulting scenario. All terribly dispiriting and repeated ad nauseam each year.

I look forward to The Herald redressing the balance as regards this important art form and major aspect of a rich musical Scottish tradition, beloved all over the world.
