THE Herald's long-standing correspondent for the Highlands has been praised by MSPs for his dedication to the region as he retired.

David Ross had reported on issues and events affecting the Highlands and Islands for the Herald since 1988. He stepped down last week.

In a motion to the Scottish Parliament, Green MSP for the Highlands and Islands John Finnie wished Mr Ross well for the future.

Mr Finnie said: "The Parliament notes the retirement from The Herald of the journalist, David Ross, who has covered the Highlands for the newspaper since 1988; praises his dedication to the region, covering issues ranging from land reform and the environment to transport and Gaelic; further notes his award earlier in 2017 of the Barron Trophy for lifetime achievement in journalism in the Highlands and Islands, and wishes him well in his retirement."

The motion was backed by MSPs from across the political spectrum including Monica Lennon and Iain Gray for Labour; Colin Beattie, Richard Lyle, Stewart Stevenson, and Joan McAlpine for the SNP; Jamie Halcro Johnston Murdo Fraser for the Conservatives; LibDem Liam McArthur ; and Green MSP Alison Johnstone.

Mr Ross was presented with the lifetime achievement award at the Highlands and Islands Media Awards in January where his son, Calum - chief reporter of Aberdeen-based daily the Press & Journal - was also named the region's Reporter of the Year.
