A LUXURY hotel in Edinburgh was evacuated after a large fire broke out on its roof.

Fire crew battled the fire at the Nira Caledonia hotel in Gloucester Place in the Stockbridge area of the city.

Witnesses reported hearing a loud “bang”, with reports that gas canisters had exploded on the roof.

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had started at 2.50pm on Monday afternoon.

He said: “A total of five appliances attended and crews extinguished the fire using high-powered hoses.

“There were no casualties and firefighters ensured the area was safe before leaving the scene.”

The hotel, which consists of three floors, has historic status and is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels group.

On its Twitter account it said that all its guests and staff had been evacuated and that all were safe and accounted for.

It also said that there had been some water damage and that it was outbooking its guests to other premises. Police had put in place traffic controls while the blaze was ongoing.
