In some ways, there is little to lose other than face when a team who can spend the guts of £400m on two players knock on your door. Celtic will roll out the red carpet for PSG on Tuesday night but they will do so with sticking plasters taping up what looks like a threadbare squad, particularly next to the riches of the glamorous Parisians.

PSG have injury issues of their own to contest with, but the worry for Celtic is a backline that boasts just one fit centre-half. The Parkhead side were keen to add another before the closure of last week’s transfer window but, as Brendan Rodgers stressed, were unwilling to bring in new additions simply to make up the numbers. They could yet pursue players who are free agents but as they stand on the cusp of their second Champions League group campaign under Rodgers, there in an impoverished look to the backline options.

“It was clear we wanted a centre-half and he [Rivaldo Coetzee] was a player who was young but had good experience and who came highly recommended to us,” said Rodgers. “So we were disappointed at the time for the youngster but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to happen. We tried one or two other thing late on once that fell through but I wasn’t just looking at a number. I didn’t want to just bring in a centre-half, it needed to be a certain profile, a certain type. I am not one for stockpiling players.”

It means that Jozo Simunovic will get a run out against Hamilton Accies this evening, a game he would ordinarily have sat out. The defender’s medical history with knee issues tends to mean that he does not feature whenever Celtic play on an artificial surface but having not played in almost a month and as the only fit defender, he will get some game time under his belt tonight.

Still, though, if the headache of who to send out with the job of containing the celebrated forward line of PSG is giving Rodgers nightmares, he wasn’t for showing it.

“You can’t look at it that way,” said the Celtic manager. “It’s exciting. The players, the staff, the supporters, we are all looking forward to it. We have a job to do against Hamilton first. Once that’s done you are looking forward to hopefully one of the great nights at Celtic Park in terms of atmosphere and occasion.

“PSG will be coming to Celtic Park to put a show on. It’s the first game in the Champions League and it’s been selected for television. It’s going to be a wonderful occasion.

“Individually they are exceptional, but you are always trying to find a way to get a result.

“There’s no doubt they have brought in one of the elite players in the world in Neymar,” continued Rodgers. “He’s an incredible talent.

“The young boy Mbappe looks a real player. You add Cavani to that, who I’ve thought in the right team is top class, there’s the likes of Verratti, Draxler, Di Maria. At the back they are quick and strong, with the experience of the likes of Thiago Motta.

“It’s a challenge - but that’s why we wanted to qualify.”

Leigh Griffith will sit out of tonight’s meeting after taking a kick to the back of his calf while on international duty with Scotland on Monday evening, and that may mean that 19-year-old French striker Odsonne Edouard makes his debut.

The 19-year-old’s loan move from PSG was finalised short before the cut-off time of the transfer window and it could be that he gets his first outing in a Celtic shirt against Accies.

“He’ll be in the squad, that’s for sure,” said Rodgers. “That’s the reason for bringing him in. And he has been playing and training, so he’s up to speed. It’s not as if he hasn’t been playing. So he’s available.

“He’s typical of the French recently. He’s come through their youth system and he is super-quick. He’s also strong and he has a good touch. He’s on the upward curve in his career.

“Time will tell. It is going to be about attitude and determination and personality. But, purely on talent, he is a big talent. He’s got great feel and great ability. And, like I say, he’s got that modern asset of sheer pace and power. He’s still young, so he’s got a lot to learn, but what a great place for him to come and learn.”

Despite the looming allure of Tuesday night’s game, Rodgers does not expect the focus to slip from tonight’s more mundane encounter against Hamilton.

“I don’t think they will,” he said. “We have always been pretty clear, our bread and butter is not looking too far in front of ourselves. We focus on playing well in the game in front of us.

“There are some brilliant games coming up but let’s start off how we mean to go on.

“Hamilton have made a nice little start, Martin Canning will be delighted with how they have gone. It’s on telly and they will want to show up well.

“We need to meet this challenge before we think about the next one.”
