KRIS Boyd went off into the Edinburgh night enjoying the last laugh over his Hearts detractors. The 34-year-old striker mocked home supporters who had been giving him stick about his weight by gesturing about the size of his belly after opening the scoring at Murrayfield yesterday. All of this was good-natured carry-over from a match at Tynecastle last December where Killie were sent home 4-0 by Ian Cathro’s Hearts side, leaving Boyd – one of Cathro’s arch critics – with egg on his face.

“I got it the last time I played Hearts in Edinburgh I took a bit of stick but in football you always have an opportunity to have a go back,” said Boyd. “I’ve said it umpteen times, that football is too serious, why can’t you have a bit of banter with fans. Credit to the referee [Kevin Clancy] for not booking me because the last time I did something like that I did get booked. Credit to the Hearts fans too, they had a laugh the last time, but I will leave here with the big smile today.”

While Boyd said it would have been a ‘travesty’ if the Ayrshire side hadn’t won the match, it took a fine late goal from substitute Adam Frizzell with minutes remaining. The 19-year-old’s second of the season came after fine work from Rory McKenzie and Stephen O’Donnell, just after goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald had saved from Isma Goncalves. Boyd said he felt the player had proved a point after his omission from Scot Gemmill’s Scotland Under-21 squad against Latvia and Ukraine. “Look at Adam Frizzell, he had a great strike at Firhill a couple of weeks ago and another one today,” said Boyd. “Fair play to the lad, there must be some players in the Under 21 team if he cannot get in it, that’s for sure.”
