TODAY’S photograph comes not from the Herald’s archives but from New Zealand; more specifically, from Merle Mounsey, whose father, Robert James (Jim) Richmond, was a driver with the 2nd NZ(Army) FA Brigade, 6th (Howitzer) Battery. The photograph was taken around 1917-1919 at the studio of Clarke Barry, 471 Sauchiehall Street, Charing Cross. Jim, whose father and grandfather were from Glasgow and Kilmarnock respectively, joined up on January 3, 1917, 23 days after his 20th birthday. He arrived in England that July and, on leave, he and some friends went to London. “I have a photo,” writes Merle, “of five of them taken there but I’m not sure how long his leave was or if he made it to Glasgow.” Jim served on the Western Front and was granted leave to the UK in October 1918. He found himself back in this country the following March before sailing for home again. Merle is researching the family history and has a copy of a dinner invitation, addressed but not posted to Jim c/o 17 Florence Place , for dinner on Tuesday 25th at 17 Stanley Street, off Woodlands Road. “Of the five possibilities for this day and date, only September 1917 or March 1919 would have been possible, with the latter being the likelier. Is this when the photograph was taken? I would also like to identify the women: it has been suggested they may be the Miller sisters, of 17 Stanley Street.” Anyone who can help should email letters@theherald.co.uk
