On loan Rangers player Carlos Pena has been sacked by Mexican side Cruz Azul after being caught urinating in a fountain.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who returned to his homeland on loan in January, has had his contract terminated, with officials citing "alcohol abuse" as the cause.

The £2 million player, who has played just two games for Cruz Azul, was signed by former Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha following an unsuccessful first half of the season at Ibrox.

Rangers now face having to pay his £20,000 a week wages for the remainder of his two-year contract if he returns to Murray Park.

Cruz Azul last week launched an investigation in Pena after he was spotted buying a six-pack of beer straight after training at a shop outside the club's La Noria complex while still wearing his kit.

It is claimed he later became abusive to staff at the team's Royal Pedregal Hotel after they caught him urinating in the hotel's water feature.

His contract is due to be terminated on Sunday after the final game of the first half of Liga MX against Veracruz.

Reports suggest that Pena may attend an alcohol rehabilitation programme before he returns to Glasgow.

Last week, Caixinha admitted Pena could be dismissed.

He said: "Carlos should know that sometimes in life, people don't get a chance like he has had...and certainly not two.

"So I have to decide what intervention to take with him. These range from a variety of fines or we can end his contract now.

"He is under contract until the end of the year, but in extreme cases, we can call it off and say to him 'thank you Carlos and goodbye.'"
