AS firefighters battled massive wildfires in England during this week’s heatwave, Scotland wasn’t immune to risk, as this image taken in Slochd, near Inverness, shows.

Photographer Peter Jolly was passing by when he saw the fire, and a Twitter account from the local senior officer of Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in the Highland area later tweeted: “Great effort by @fire_scot crews from Inverness and Aviemore to contain and extinguish this wildfire by Slochd next to the A9. Excellent ‘stop’ which prevented it spreading to the nearby forestry plantation.”

Meanwhile, police yesterday said the A990 between Portgordon and Buckie had been closed due to a gorse fire at Buckpool Golf Course, and urged the public to avoid the area.
