PRO-EU campaigners insist the momentum in the Brexit debate is “only in one direction” - towards holding a second referendum on the final withdrawal agreement, following a new poll, which suggested a majority now backed the option.

The YouGov snapshot showed support for a People’s Vote had risen to 42 per cent in favour compared to 40 per cent against; this contrasts to respective figures of 37 and 45 points a month ago.

Eloise Todd of Best for Britain said: "Elected politicians are behind public opinion; two years behind to be precise.

"The public are becoming increasingly restless. They don't want a shoddy deal full of second-rate concessions or a nightmare no-deal.

"The sands of public opinion have shifted against Brexit; that's why it's crucial to have a People's Vote on Brexit with the option to stay in the EU."

Labour’s Gareth Thomas, a leading supporter of the People’s Vote campaign, said: “Momentum in this debate is only in one direction. A month ago, supporters of a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal were eight per cent behind, now we are two per cent ahead.

“The Brexiters are in deep intellectual and political trouble. They have run out of ideas and offer nothing positive to the people of Britain.

“The Government’s Brexit White Paper has been torn to shreds and ministers cannot decide whether they are in favour or against ‘no deal’ as option. Parliament is deeply divided and unable to back a coherent Brexit option.

“That is why millions of people now back a People’s Vote on the final Brexit deal.

"Brexit is a big deal. But it is definitely not a done deal,” added the MP for Harrow West.
