Prior to opening in August, Virgin Hotels said its new Glasgow hotel would “redefine the concept of luxury accommodation, offering guests an unmatched level of service, exceptional culinary experiences, and a stunning setting overlooking the Clyde”.

The five-star hotel, located on Clyde Street, is the second European property from the Virgin Group, founded by Sir Richard Branson.

Guests can dine at the hotel’s flagship restaurant and bar, Commons Club, or sip cocktails to the soundtrack of local DJs at Highline, the 'all-day dining and entertainment destination' under a retractable roof on the bar’s mezzanine level.

However, the luxury hotel has attracted criticism for its “rip-off” drinks prices - with one member of the public claiming they were charged £30 “for just two drinks”.

The person took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to warn others to 'steer clear' of the bar at the city centre hotel.

The tweet read: “Virgin Hotel - Glasgow : Avoid rip off bar. The latest hotel to open in Glasgow charges £30 for just two drinks.

“A beer and single gin and tonic was almost £30 ! The gin was £20! A burger was cheaper. The barman insisted this was correct, avoid this and place.”

A receipt from the hotel bar, obtained by The Herald, confirms that a gin and tonic will set your back more than £17.

The receipt shows that the price of a double serving of Hendricks Gin is £11, while a Fever Tree Tonic Water costs £4.50. From an initial subtotal of £15.50, the addition of a service charge of £1.94 gives a total of £17.44.
