A DOCTOR has gone on trial accused of stalking his ex- partner who worked at the same hospital.

Dr Nishan Fernando, 38, is claimed to have caused hospital orderly Shonagh Cunningham, 22, to suffer fear and alarm by repeatedly approaching her after they split up.

The court heard the pair, who worked at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, had dated on and off from 2012 until their relationship ended last November.

Miss Cunningham told Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday the doctor started "intimidating" her after their split, by following, staring and smirking at her.

She claimed Fernando started appearing at her bus-stop when she finished her shift and turned up on one of her Christmas nights out.

The cardiothoracic registrar at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) is alleged to have repeatedly approached and stared at the health care support worker between December 1, 2013, and February 14. He denies the charge.

The incidents allegedly took place at the city's Babylon nightclub, ARI and Union Square shopping centre.

Miss Cunningham said she had been on a Christmas night out last December when she met him in Babylon nightclub's beer garden.

She said: "He stood about a metre away and just stared at me."

She added: "I felt I couldn't go anywhere without him being there."

Defence lawyer David Sutherland said her claims were "fabrications" and "exaggerations", which she denied.

The trial is set to continue later this year.
