A FORMER lifeboat crewman has been jailed for four and a half years after subjecting a teenager to a rape ordeal.

Daryl Smith, 23, turned up unexpectedly at the victim's home in Shetland and was let in before raping her on two occasions.

Smith, formerly of Cunningsburgh, Shetland, denied rape and claimed the sex that took place was consensual, but was convicted of two charges of rape by a jury at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Judge Lady Wise said both rapes involved an element of force and added it was clear that the victim "continues to struggle with what took place".

The former member of the Lerwick lifeboat crew was placed on the sex offenders' register indefinitely.
