A MAN has been jailed for four years for raping a law student as she slept at home after a birthday night out.

Christopher McKeown claimed the sex was consensual, but was convicted last month after the High Court in Glasgow heard during his trial that the student woke up to find the 30-year-old having sex with her at her house in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

She told the court she begged him to stop. Sentence had been deferred until yesterday at the High Court in Edinburgh,

Judge Edward Bowen QC told McKeown, also of Barrhead: "You are the victim of a culture which seems to be that large quantities of alcohol can be consumed without any effect on behaviour. It is tragically clear it did have an effect on you."
