AN Olympic weightlifting hopeful has been convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl.

Dylan Scott, 20, was given two years detention after being found guilty of raping the girl at his home on Valentine's Day last year. He was also placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Scott, from Ardrossan, North Ayrshire, claimed throughout his trial at the High Court in Glasgow that it was consensual but his victim said he refused to listen when she told him she did not want to have sex.

Corroboration for her version of events came from Facebook where there was talk of them having sex and Scott refusing to stop when she asked him to.

Judge Lord Matthews said: "There was no doubt intercourse took place. The issue was whether it was rape. Corroboration was provided by Facebook messages that indicated there was intercourse but you had not withdrawn when she asked you to.

"I was asked not to take the unusual step of not imposing a custodial sentence, but rape is rape, although the jury found it started off as consensual."

Defence QC Gary Allan had asked him to consider not sending Scott to detention because initially the sex had been consensual.

He added: "My client is a man who just wanted to make this country proud through his weightlifting."

The court heard Scott was seventh in the 56kg clean and jerk in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games.

He was the under-21 Scottish and British 56kg weighlifting champion and was hoping to be chosen for the British team for the Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.
