POLICE are appealing for information after an 18-year-old woman was raped.

The woman was walking in an isolated area of New Cumnock, East Ayrshire, between 10pm and midnight on Friday, April 26, when she was approached from behind by a man wearing dark clothing. He pulled her to the ground and subjected her to a serious sexual assault.

Police said she had been left traumatised by the ordeal.

The attack happened in an area between West Park Avenue and West Park Farm, and police are now seeking information from the public which might help them pinpoint the time of the incident and trace the attacker.

Detective Inspector Scott McClelland, of Kilmarnock Police Office, said: "The young woman has been left traumatised by this assault and it is imperative that we trace the man responsible.

"This type of incident is rare, however, I want to reassure the local community in New Cumnock that extensive inquiries are ongoing to trace the man responsible.

"There have been extra police patrols deployed to the area to provide public reassurance.

"At this time officers are working to narrow down the timescale of when the assault took place, therefore I would urge anyone who may have seen this young woman in the area, or indeed may have seen a man wearing dark coloured clothing acting suspiciously.

"The victim was wearing black leggings and a blue top with a black jacket and boots. She would have been in a distressed state following the attack, and I would ask anyone who saw a woman matching that description late on Friday night into Saturday morning to come forward."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Kilmarnock Police Office on 01563 505000, or the non-emergency number, 101.
