A MAJOR police inquiry is under way after a house and a car were shot at in Edinburgh.

Detectives are appealing for information after the culprits fired off shots at two addresses in the city's Gilmerton area on Saturday night.

The first incident took place at The Murrays Brae where a parked car was targeted at around 9.30pm. A short time later, a gun was also fired at a house in Gilmerton Dykes Drive.

Police Scotland said no-one was injured in either of the attacks, which were also being linked with a "suspicious incident" at Walter Scott Avenue at 10pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Houston said: "This is a significant police inquiry and I would appeal for anyone who has any information that could assist with this investigation to come forward."

Chief Inspector Mark Patterson added: "Incidents like this are extremely rare but in light of this we have stepped up high-visibility patrols in the area of Gilmerton and the Inch."
