A SHOPKEEPER who was stabbed in an attack two weeks ago has died in hospital.

Police have now launched a murder inquiry following the death of Javaid Ali, who was stabbed in the neck while working in the Sunshine Grocers' shop in Green Road, Paisley, on June 15.

He had been fighting for his life in Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he died yesterday.

Detectives investigating the attack had already carried out a stop-and-interview operation last Friday, speaking to more than 160 people in a bid to gain information about the attack.

Detective Chief Inspector Duncan Sloan said: "Unfortunately, Mr Ali's injuries were such that he was unable to recover from them.

"Mr Ali was a family man, married with three sons and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

"We have still to establish a motive for this mindless attack but our focus remains on finding whoever is responsible.

"All lines of inquiry will be pursued. I feel sure that the answer to this violent crime lies within the community."

Police have appealed for a female motorist who stopped outside the shop shortly after the incident to come forward.

They also want to speak to a man seen walking from the shop at 3pm and a young woman walking towards the cycle track towards Green Road.
