A Fife primary school has become the first in the UK and only the third in Europe to win a prestigious award recognising work to develop pupils' leadership and social skills.

Fair Isle Primary School in Kirkcaldy now has "Lighthouse status" in the Leader In Me programme, designed to develop self-confidence, teamwork, responsibility and social skills among children.

Head teacher Rae Walker praised the work of pupils and staff over the last three years.

The programme was created in the US by headteacher Muriel Summers, who was determined to turn around a failing school in North Carolina.

She identified leadership as a key theme for development and encouraged staff to implement new principles in class. Fair Isle will receive the award later this week.

Mrs Walker said: "This is a huge achievement for the school and has taken a massive commitment from the pupils, staff and parents to get here.

"We started the The Leader in Me programme three years ago and it is now part our daily life at Fair Isle.

"The programme has brought benefits to all aspects of the school. We are improving attendance, lateness, behaviour and attainment.

"Every child in the school has some kind of leadership role in their class."
