A UNIVERSITY in England has become the first to have its teacher training course accredited in Scotland.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) has approved a postgraduate certificate in education at Northampton University.

The move by the GTCS means it will be easier for school staff who train in Northampton to work in Scotland.

A spokesman said the body would consider expanding the scheme to other institutions.

He said: "This course creates qualified teachers who met the stringent standards and guidelines set by the GTCS and is providing a real service to teachers hoping to be able to teach in Scotland."

Helen Scott, deputy dean at Northampton University's school of education, added: "This is recognition of a course which is academically robust and gives our students the accreditation Scotland requires."
