CAMPAIGNERS have staged a rally as they ramp up the pressure on councillors over lack of space at an overcrowded school in Glasgow.

Supporters of Space For Hillhead marched from the school to the City Chambers, where they handed over a petition to councillor Stephen Curran calling for a halt to a proposal to move some pupils from Hillhead Primary School to the nearby high school.

More than 200 parents and pupils from Hillhead Primary and Secondary, and another nearby primary school were involved along with five councillors in yesterday's event. The suggestion, which involves the primary seven class, aims to ease pressure on the school. Parents believe this can be dealt with by moving the adjacent Kelvin Park Early Years Centre (KPEYC).

Hillhead Primary pupils are being taught in the school's library and ITC suite, as well as break-out areas. There are not enough toilets for the number of youngsters in the school and no space for PE or playtimes.

However, Kelvin Park parents were upset the rally had gone ahead.

Kate Cotter, a mother who backs the Save KPEYC campaign, said: "The Space For Hillhead petition states in black and white that it supports dispersal of the EYC.

"I fully respect the rights of parents to express their dissatisfaction with the transitioning proposal but a lot of parents and children marching haven't fully appreciated that dispersal is just a polite word for closure.

"I trust the council will think carefully about the effect closure would have on more than 100 families and generations to come. Our youngest campaigner is one-week-old and attended his first political meeting this week with Mr Curran."
