ONE recent example of a successful partnership between Catholic and non-denominational schools in Scotland was recognised at the recent sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards.

Perth Grammar School and nearby St John's Academy were joint winners in the School Sports category after joining forces to create a sports comprehensive.

The programme takes a cross-curricular and interdenominational approach to learning and teaching at both schools and promotes physical activity and sport.

Audrey May, headteacher at St John's Academy, said: "We have seen real benefits arising from the work we have already done and we are looking forward to continuing the partnership together."

Since the programme was introduced in 2009, an increasing number of pupils have had the chance to take part in sport and physical activity during classtime, and also at clubs during lunchtimes and after school.

The council's education convener, Liz Grant, said: "It is fantastic that our schools are being recognised at a national level for their achievements. It is clear that the programme is making a difference for pupils.

"Encouraging children and young people to take part in sport and be physically active not only improves their health and wellbeing but also contributes to improving their wider attainment in school."
