Plans have been unveiled for a five-star hotel and spa, a bunkhouse, 50 lodges and campsite in the shadow of Ben Nevis.

The proposal for the estimated £25million visitor resort, comes jointly from Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) and Highlands & Islands Enterprise (HIE).

It would be set in the 7,300 acres of the FCS's Leanachan Forest, already a popular draw for tourists, providing access to The Nevis Range ski centre, mountain biking and scenic walking trails.

Robert Grant, a member of the FCS team managing the project, said good links and a robust feedback process had been established with key stakeholders and the wider community.

"We're aiming for a resort hotel that complements, rather than competes with, existing provision in the area. The majority of participants would welcome the facilities and the additional tourist numbers that it could bring."

HIE head of tourism, Chris Taylor, said: "We are pleased the 'Nevis Forest and Mountain Resort masterplan' is progressing. This project has the potential to substantially increase visitor numbers and strengthen the economy of the wider Lochaber area."

The project team is hoping to apply for planning permission next summer
