An extra 10,000 copies of the White Paper on independence have been ordered because of high demand.

The original print run of 20,000 copies ran out just days after the 670-page document was unveiled by First Minister Alex Salmond.

The online version of the paper, which sets out the SNP administration's aims in the event of a Yes vote in the referendum on September 18, notched up 368,466 page views as of Friday morning.

It has also been downloaded as an e-book 30,149 times, according to the Scottish Government.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "We want as many people as possible to read our comprehensive guide to independence and make up their own minds about Scotland's future.

"I knew there would be demand for the document but I had no idea that we would run out in just a few days.

"This shows the interest that people have for solid, reliable advice on what an independent Scotland will look like. And we are happy to provide that."

Around 2.5 million postcards with information about how to access the document are being delivered to households across Scotland from tomorrow.
