The Scots finalist of The Great British Bake Off has launched a children's baking competition.

Young Scots cookery star James Morton, who lost out in the final watched by millions of BBC TV viewers last month, opened the contest organised by Three Sisters Bake in Quarriers Village in Inverclyde.

The contest is open to budding bakers under 16.

Mr Morton, who is originally from Shetland and is the son of the Scottish broadcaster Tom Morton, said: "I've been baking since I was tiny wee myself, and almost every day I'd go round to my gran's house to bake with her after school, so it's definitely best to start them early in the kitchen.

"My number one piece of advice to young and aspiring bakers to never dismiss something just because it hasn't been done before."

Nichola Reith, pastry chef at Three Sisters Bake, added: "Our aim is to encourage kids to get into baking at home and to turn it into an activity which the whole family can be part of, having fun and making a mess together."
