Bannockburn event in plea for volunteers

VOLUNTEERS are being sought to welcome visitors to Stirling as it prepares to host the Battle of Bannockburn anniversary celebrations and Armed Forces Day.

The city's council and Volunteer Scotland wants to enlist host city helpers to give a friendly welcome, directions around the area and to different events as well as offering general advice and assistance for the events.

It is gearing up for the 700th anniversary of the battle on June 28 and 29, which includes a re-enactment Robert the Bruce's defeat of the English.

Thousands of people are expected to head for Stirling for the colourful flag waving Armed Forces Day tribute to UK service personnel on June 28. It's the first time the event has been held in Scotland since 2011.

Applicants must be over 16 and community engagement team leader Lynne McKinley said: "We're asking for folk from the Stirling Council area to help us prepare for the biggest year of events in our city in living memory. Volunteers will be part of some unforgettable experiences for Stirling, and be part of the bigger Council force preparing for an extraordinary 2014."

Provost Mike Robbins said: "We have a fantastic programme of events lined up for Stirling this year and we're determined to offer the warmest possible welcome to all the visitors who will come to Stirling. I know how welcoming the people of Stirling can be."
