SHOPPING centres are celebrating a successful Christmas period, which saw millions of shoppers flock to stores in the hope of grabbing a bargain.

Centres throughout the country reported a rise in the number of customers from Boxing Day to Hogmanay, with some noting a 54% increase on the last Saturday of 2011

Ryan Manson, general manager of Aberdeen's Union Square, said: "We have experienced a fantastic couple of days at Union Square with nearly 290,000 shoppers flocking to the centre for sales bargains since Boxing Day. Footfall on the last Saturday of 2012 was up 54% on the same Saturday last year, which was New Year's Eve."

Glasgow's Silverburn shopping centre also welcomed more than 385,000 shoppers through its doors over the past week, a 2% increase on 2011.

Silverburn manager David Pierotti claimed customers had turned out to spend the £1 million of gift vouchers the centre sold in the run up to Christmas.

He said: "Boxing Day was phenomenal – we had more than 55,000 shoppers – a 7% increase on last year – and its been strong ever since."

Braehead shopping centre and Aberdeen's Bon Accord & St Nicholas Centre also had high volumes of shoppers. Craig Stevenson, Bon Accord manager, said: "The sales period from Boxing Day to New Year has been very positive."

Braehead's general manager Peter Beagley said: "Shoppers still have bargain fever. There are some great deals to be had and people know a bargain when they see one."
