An award given in memory of the late Scottish musician Martyn Bennett, who is also being honoured by Celtic Connections next year, has been given to a 25 year old bass player and composer from Glasgow.

James Lindsay won £2,000 and The Martyn Bennett Prize for Traditional Music Composition for his composition "Hebrides Terrace Seamount", it was announced at Edinburgh's Queens Hall.

Rob Taylor, 16, from Edinburgh was named runner up for his composition "Three Tunes from Outer Space" .

The winner was selected by a judging panel led by Scottish composer/musician Jim Sutherland, composer Sally Beamish and Hector MacInnes, winner of the 2013 Martyn Bennett Prize.

The shortlisted finalists' compositions were performed live by a band led by multi-instrumentalist Seonaid Aitken and featuring Fraser Fifield, Colin Train, Graeme Stephen and Andrew Sharkey.

All the finalists' compositions have been recorded for future broadcast.

Supported by Creative Scotland, the Prize seeks "reward the vital role that composition plays in Scotland's traditional music."

Adrian Harris, chief executive of The Queen's Hall, said: "We always hoped the competition would spark the broadest interest and this year we hit the jackpot with one internationally successful musician winning the award alongside a 16 year old school pupil as the runner up.

"The Martyn Bennett Prize shows that Scottish traditional music is not only in robust health right now but that it also has a brilliant future."
