SIR Richard Branson yesterday announced that he and his children Sam and Holly will be the first passengers into space when his Virgin Galactic space tourism programme takes off.

Sir Richard will join his heirs on the 60-mile trip into orbit on the SpaceShipTwo aircraft by the end of next year.

Scots-born businessman Grant Roberts, 36, who is based in Dubai, was among 120 tourists who joined the Virgin boss ahead of the £128,000 per trip flights at Farnborough Air Show.

Mr Roberts who attended with his grandfather Frank Roberts, 90, a Second World War RAF pilot who flew on sorties over Germany, said: "I was inspired by the exploits of my grandfather, as was my father. I can't wait to go up."
