DEGAS, Cezanne, Boudin and Renoir are among the Masters of Impressionism whose works are going on display for the first time together at The Burrell Collection in Glasgow.

The free exhibition, which begins today and runs until January 5, is the first time the collection of more than 30 artworks has been seen together.

It features over 30 French 19th-century works and is described as being of international significance.

Sir Angus Grossart, chairman of Burrell Renaissance group, which is advising on proposals for a refurbishment of the gallery and advancing a Parliamentary Bill to allow items from the collection to be exhibited abroad for the first time, said: "Sir William Burrell showed a brave spirit and bold discrimination in his collecting.

"The works by Degas and other Impressionists which are in his collection underline his eye saw well beyond the conventional. This exhibition will really help us to understand the international scale and width of Burrell's aspirations and the quality of his great achievements."

Sir William's collection of works by Degas is regarded as the finest in the UK.

Councillor Archie Graham, chairman of Glasgow Life and depute leader of the city's council, said: "Sir William Burrell's taste and passion for collecting has delighted and thrilled visitors during the 30 years the gallery has been open. This exhibition brings together some of the finest works in his collection for the first time which will delight all those who come and see it."
